Life in a Hotel Room

Yes, you heard it correctly! We have been living in a hotel room for a month and a half, maybe more (I’ve lost track). We relocated out of Florida due to job promotion. Before selling the house, we made a few trips up to N.C. to check out the area. (ALL SIX OF US) a 9-hour drive took us close to 12 hours. Krystal said it was my fault. You know needing to stop every few hours for potty breaks (I’m old) and food. However, we made the trip very tired but ready to check out where we would be living for a while. And of course, after a 12-hour drive with the car loaded and no leg room we were happy to see the door open to our Hotel Room and nice cozy bed to sleep on.

The first week was nice to get away and look for all the new things we could be doing once we moved to the area. N.C. was always the place Krystal wanted to move. Well, she had a few states she wanted to go to. And N.C. was always top two. So, when she was offered a promotion to N.C., we had our family meeting and discussed the pros and cons of moving to the area. I think the first and most important thing we had to research about the state was its homeschooling laws. Once we figured that out that, getting the kids on board was next.

The kids were all in, and so started our journey of moving out of our hometown state and on to N.C. Well like I said the first trip and week in the hotel room was ok, it was very tiresome, but you know how it goes the first time you do a new thing is fun and exciting. However, 12-hour trips back and forth get old fast! And we did a few of them before we officially sold our house.

We got the house in Florida sold, got our furniture out and was out of our house in no time. However, we are now homeless, the process of looking for a house that we wanted and could afford was very frustrating. Not just because Krystal was working at this time, and we were in the hotel room but because we were relying on a realtor that had a life and really only worked when it was good for her. And we knew even once we found the house we wanted, it still was going to take at least a month until the house was ready for closing.

We are a family of 6, in a hotel room, now I guess I need to say we got a room with a kitchen, so we could cook. However, we didn’t have the same room all the time (we had to pack up the car and change rooms a few times) some of the rooms had two queen beds and a sleeper, we did get a blow-up mattress, so we had the space for everyone. The room we were in the most had a king bed in a room, and a living room with a sofa sleeper, and a kitchen. Really that is all we needed, right? Well, it was but the only thing is there is 4 kids, and we were on the third floor.

Matthew was trying to do his flips and cartwheels and the twins were rolling around on the floor wrestling with each other, and Collin was busy fighting his A.I. enemies on his Metta Crest Virtual reality game that covers his eyes and puts him in his own world. (Remember I’m the grandma, that means “OLD” to them) We didn’t have things like that in my time!! And heavens forbid anyone bother Collin while he is in his own world. He has a man voice now (14) and he doesn’t know how to speak to his brothers without breaking the sound barrier.

I think the first three weeks here my favorite words were…Lower your voice, no jumping there is people below us and QUIET! Oh, I forgot to tell you we also have our dog Gizmo, she barks when the air conditional comes on, So, Yea! We are quite the group! So far, they haven’t kicked us out and we only have a week before we get to close on the new house… We are all very happy, things are starting to look up. We are all ready to settle into our house, let the boys run and scream in the yard (sorry new neighbors) and slide in with the N.C. culture.

Reminds me of the time when there was about 10 of us in the garage because that was the only air conditioner that worked after Hurricane Irma
    Good times! Love you all.
